Karen has always had an interest in the Utah Pioneers, as she is a descendant rich in Mormon Pioneer heritage. In 1997 she became involved in pioneer reenactment and began to volunteer at the Old Deseret Village at This is the Place Heritage Park. That was when she made her first pioneer clothing. She met her husband, Earl, in Gardiner cabin at the village that same year. After the birth of her daughter, she began Pioneer Designs as a way to support her family. Earl had been diagnosed with a deadly liver disease, and the business made it possible for her to stay home and care for her family. She is assisted by her mother in manufacturing her clothing. They are descended from a family of seamstresses.

Originally located in Salt Lake City, Karen moved to Lewiston, Utah after the death of Earl, so that she could be closer to her family and to raise her daughter in a small community environment.

Pioneer Designs is located Lewiston, Utah. Lewiston is a small town in Northern Utah. Located in the Cache Valley which is full of its own Pioneer Heritage.
